Frederick County Humane Society’s First Annual K9K will take placeSaturday, November 12, 2011, at Baker Park, in historic downtown Frederick. Proceeds will help support affordable spay/neuter and rabies vaccines for Frederick County companion animals. The event will be held rain or shine at 8am and registration starts at 7am. You can even participate with your dog. (They must be leashed and have proof of current rabies vaccination.) The first 150 registrants are guaranteed a t-shirt.

The Most Adorable Pets in America

Kudos to Kenny Walter for being featured in the 2011 edition of "The Most Adorable Pets in America". Kenny has been a patient here at Kingsbrook Animal Hospital since March of 2001 when he came in as a little kitten adopted from Frederick County Humane Society. Since then we have gratefully cared for Kenny and are happy to report that he is a very healthy 10 year old kitty with a stellar personality. Congragulations to Kenny and his dedicated owners who take amazing care of him.

Add-A-Bite for Animals Fundraiser

WHAT IS IT?: a fun, easy way to help raise money for the Frederick County Humane Society by eating at participating area restaurants! You must present the special Add-A-Bite certificate (link located further down in this email and on our website) at the restaurant in order for us to enjoy the benefit of your participation. Feel free to make multiple copies!

WHEN: Add-A-Bite kicks off Saturday, August 6, at Five Guys Burgers on Carroll Creek and then continues throughout the month of
August at several other restaurants. Saturday is also the Dog Days of Summer in downtown Frederick and we hope you will join us for this fun doggy evening!

Five Guys: from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 6, diners are encouraged to drop their food receipt in one of the FCHS collection boxes located there. Five Guys will donate 10 percent of the receipt totals in those boxes to our organization! Note: You DO NOT present your certificate to Five Guys; they will use your meal receipt from that day to calculate the donation to us.

Year of the Rabbit

According to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the Rabbit. Unfortunately, many misguided people are using this as a reason to adopt rabbits and then, not realizing they are companion animals with specific needs, dumping them on local shelters. Learn more about rabbit care by visiting with Frederick's local chapter of the House Rabbit Society, on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon at the Frederick County Humane Society. Holiday Pet Pics with Santa

Photographic portraits of pets with Santa will be offered Sunday, December 5 from 2:00-5:00pm at the Frederick County Humane Society, 217 West Patrick Street in downtown Frederick. Portraits will be provided in electronic format for a cost of $10. Proceeds from the project will benefit programs of the Humane Society.

Pet Pix will take place during the Santa Paws Bazaar, in which local vendors of specialty merchandise will display their wares at the Santa Paws Baazar. Participants include Tomboy Tools, Scentsy, Bling Bags and the Frederick County Humane Society's Crafters Guild. Vendors will cpontribute a portion of sales to FCHS.

No advance registration is rquired. Plentiful street parking is available. Pet owners are asked to have their pets in a secure carrier or on a non-retracting leash.

Frederick Pet Election

The time has come for all good people (and pets!) to come to the aid of Frederick County! That’s right! Maryland Charter has approved a special election for a President of Frederick County**. However, election rules state that all candidates must be loyal, trustworthy, & above all, there for us in good times & bad! Since no human can fit these requirements, we must look to our only source, our trusted dogs, cats, birds, etc. to lead us during our troubled times! (**just kidding!)

What is it?

A fun fundraising event benefitting The Frederick County Humane Society and The American Red Cross, Frederick County Chapter. You simply register your beloved pet for prez then start collecting votes from family, friends & concerned citizens who know your pet will make a difference leading Frederick County!

How Does it Work?

Register your pet. $15 registration fee enables you to use our world-wide fund-raising website to both inform the populace & to collect the needed votes. Each vote costs $1. We freely admit that in this election you can buy your way in. Vote as many timesas you like, or collect as many votes from Frederick County or anywhere else. All votes from allsources count, & because of the recent Supreme Court decision, corporations can give as much as they’d like. Start campaigning today!

For every 100 votes ($100) you will receive a $10-off voucher, good at one of our sponsoring vets.

Voting is on-going from June 1st until mid-October. Whoever has the most votes at that time wins. President receives lots of great benies & will be asked to serve in many ways.

Dog Days of Summer

On Saturday, August 7th, the FCHS will participate in Dog Days of Summer, presented by the Downtown Frederick Partnership and Two Paws Up, from 5 to 9pm. Downtown Frederick goes to the dogs with costume contests, dog friendly merchants, live music, restaurants, animal art and more. The event takes place in the Frederick Main Street area -Patrick and Market Streets, Everedy Square and Shab Row. Registration opens at 5pm at Two Paws Up, Carrol Street. The FCHS will have a judjing booth and fun activity on East Patrick Street. The event wraps up with a Yappy Hour along Carol Creek atarting at 8pm at the ampitheater. HEAT ADVISORY REMINDER FOR PETS!!

On 7/8/10 we recieved this message from the humane society of Frederick County

Frederick,MD: On Tuesday, July 6th, when Frederick Co. reached record-breaking temperatures, a Labrador Retriever died in a parked car left unattended while its owner was shopping.

Don't let this happen to your pet. Never, ever leave your pet unattended in a vehicle. Bring your pet in from the heat and when pets are outside, even for brief periods, keep them off hot pavement and provide shade and plenty ofwater. If you see an animal locked inside a parked car, quickly try to locate the owner but don't delay in contacting local authroities to get the animal free. A vehicle's interior can reach 130 degrees within minutes on a hot day.

This public service reminder is provided by The Frederick County Humane Society, the county's oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the humane care of companion animals.

Grab Your Leashes for Walk-N-Wag 2010!

The Frederick County Humane Society’s 16th Annual Walk-N-Wag will be held Saturday, May 22nd from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Frederick’s Baker Park.

“This is our major fundraising event of the entire year,” said Brigitte Farrell, Executive Director. “We rely on hundreds of dog lovers to raise pledges and then come out to the park for an awesome day of fun with their beloved animal companions.” Proceeds from the event will benefit FCHS programs, including the pet food bank and emergency veterinary assistance programs.

FCHS again is teaming up with Clear Channel Radio Stations WFMD and WFRE to promote and participate at the event. Radio personalities Bob Miller and David Conrad will be the event emcees and broadcast live from the Gazebo.

The event kicks off at 9:00 a.m. when the registration tent opens, followed by welcoming remarks by Frederick Mayor Randy McClement, the traditional Blessing of the Animals, and the Walk around Baker Park at 10:00 a.m. Folks can enjoy live music and great food, visit with dozens of animal rescue groups, sponsors and vendors, enter their dogs in fun doggy contests and win great prizes. Also featured are a demonstration by the Mad Dogs Flying Disk Club, and a performance by “Mutts Gone Nuts.”

Avoid the crowds at Registration by registering now online at www.walk-n-wag.com, or at the Pre-Registration Party on Thursday, May 20 at 217 West Patrick Street from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. All participants who raise at least $50 in pledges win prizes, and all registrants will receive a goodie bag provided by sponsors and a Walk-N-Wag doggy bandana.

New Dog Park in Frederick

In mid-November, the City of Frederick held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its brand new dog park, located about 75 yards behind the FCHS's building on 217 West Patrick. The park is located at the corner of Bentz and Carroll Parkway in the former Tot Park.

To help make the dog park experience as pleasant and rewarding as possible for dogs and their owners, the FCHS will offer one-time Dog Park Etiquette seminars, starting in February of 2009.

These seminars, offered in partnership with the City, will be held the first and third Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. at our facility or the dog park, depending on the weather. You can register for the classes at the Talley Rec Center; the cost is $6 for city residents; $12 for non-city residents. We are truly excited to be working with the City on this new venture!

Lemonade Stand Update

Dennis McAfee braved the heat last Saturday by selling lemonade to raise money for the Frederick County Humane Society. Dennis set up his stand in front of the hospital and sold his homemade lemonade for 25 cents a cup. With the help of our generous clients, he was able to raise $55. Dennis, who wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up, decided to raise funds for the FCHS so the "animals could have a better life."

Way to go Dennis!!!

"Sunkist" Lemonade Stand to benefit FCHS

Dennis McAfee is seven years old and would like to be a veterinarian when he grows up. He has decided to start early in his quest to aid animals in need. Dennis has made a commitment to raise money for the Frederick County Humane Society so the "animals can have a better life."

Dennis and his mom Zara, will be braving the heat to provide our clients some cool refreshment. He will be setting up a lemonade stand in front of our hospital on Saturday, June the 28th from 9am-?. Please stop by to enjoy a glass of ice cold, fresh squeezed lemonade and support Dennis and the FCHS.
