Chance the Turtle.
Meet Chance, the Eastern Box Turtle. A wildlife rehabilitator brought him to our office for treatment of injuries to is shell from being struck by a car.
X-rays were taken to determine the extent of the damage to his shell and look for any evidence of internal injuries.
After anesthetizing Chance, the fracture site was cleaned of any debris and an antibiotic cream was applied. Small pilot holes were drilled in his shell on either side of the Fracture. Stainless steel screws were carefully placed in the shell.
Orthodontic wire was looped between screws on opposite sides of the shell fracture. The wire was tightened until the edges of the fracture were close enough to allow for healing.
In addition to letting the shell heal, reducing the fracture provides stability and will dramatically cut down on pain.
One last x-ray shows the fracture has been reduced. Chance was given pain medication, an antibiotic and some fluids and then allowed him to wake up from anesthesia.
Chance the next morning, enjoying a nice slice of Tomato. He will be returned to the wildlife rehabilitator and will need to be cared for until his shell heals & he can be released back in to the wild!
This post is dedicated to the memory of Di Conger of Last Chance Wildlife, who passed away last week. Di was a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who cared for countless small animals over many years. She is already sorely missed.

Meet Malibu

Meet Malibu! She is the newest addition to Vet Assistant, Nicolette's, family. She is a German Shepherd/Lab/Collie mix and is 5 months old . She was adopted through Frederick County Animal Shelter and has been in her forever home for 4 weeks. Her mother was 40lbs and her father was 50lbs putting her at a whopping 27lbs currently, so she is not going to get much bigger. Her favorite past times include running, chewing, playing fetch, trying to eat butterflies, and chasing the cat :) She is a very smart girl and knows how to sit and lay down (we are still in puppy class)! Just recently she was reunited with her sister, Cali, and brother, Patrick, from the litter and they had a fantastic play date full of wrestling! They are so funny, and kept everyone entertained! Needless to say they all slept very well that night!

Meet Sophia Loren
Meet Sophia Loren. She came to Kingsbrook Animal Hospital on 8/5/11 through Frederick County Animal Control after they were contacted by someone who found her wondering in a local business parking lot. She is a sweet 9 pound poodle mix that had obviously suffered some serious neglect. She had evenly spaced infected wounds on the side of her neck where something must have been poking into her skin. She was covered from head to toes to the tip of her tail in about 2 inches of solid matts and had to be shaved to the skin. She also had abrasive lesions on her side and knee. She has been adopted by a staff member at Kingsbrook Animal Hospital and is ready to start her life as an 8 year old girl's "dream dog". Welcome to the Kingsbrook Animal Hospital family Sophia. We are so glad you found us.

Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank

The donors for the EVBB are pet dogs from every walk of life. These canine heros are called upon every 2 months donate blood. Each contribution is processed into blood products that can aid up to 4 dogs in need.
Donors must weigh at least 35 pounds and be between the ages of 9 months and 7 years and be available to donate 4 - 6 times a year and commit to donating for at least one year. As a benefit, donors will receive annual blood tests for heartworm disease, chemistry panels and complete blood counts to help monitor their health. In addition, should donors ever require a transfusion, they will receive a free unit of blood or plasma for each unit donated. Of course, each time dogs donate they receive lots of biscuits and plenty of TLC.

Novartis Donates Interceptor

Over the summer Novartis Animal Health commited to donating free Interceptor (heartworm and intestitnal parasite preventative) to the rescue of KAH's choice. We chose Maryland Bichon Frise Rescue (MBFR) for the outstanding and compassionate work they do for the local (and sometimes not so local!) Bichons they take in. The terms were this: for every 12 months of Interceptor sold to a client Novartis would donate one month of Interceptor to MBFR. The client also received a $6 mail-in rebate which they could chose to redeem or opt to donate an additional month of Interceptor to MBFR. Thanks to you- the clients of KAH- a total of 84 months of Interceptor are being donated to Maryland Bichon Frise Rescue!! Thanks to the clients and to Novartis for your help in raising needed supplies for a wonderful cause!
